Brand Win: Designing Participation Into the Experience
Building a conference people didn’t just attend. They became part of it.
Brand: Texas Style Council
Project: Creative Experience Strategy
-
I founded Texas Style Council to bring female content creators, bloggers and small business owners together in real life. Starting with a small budget and minimal help, I was building everything from scratch: the brand, programming, sponsorships, logistics and the experience itself.
But from the beginning, I wanted it to feel different from a traditional conference.
The challenge wasn’t simply figuring out what should happen onstage. It was figuring out how to make 100, and eventually 1,100, people feel like participants instead of attendees.
-
I designed participation into the experience from the ground up.
Alongside panels, workshops and carefully curated speakers, I created reasons for attendees to interact with each other and with the event itself: badges, awards, parties, themed volunteer teams and a gamified sponsor passport that turned exploring brand activations into part of the fun.
I brought the same thinking to sponsorships. Rather than treating sponsors as logos to place around a venue, I looked for ways to make brands part of an experience attendees actually wanted to engage with. Over five conferences, that approach helped attract national partners including Squarespace, Macy’s, PayPal, ModCloth and Poshmark, with sponsorship packages reaching approximately $10,000.
As the ideas got bigger, I built the team to execute them, leading sales staff, interns and volunteer teams of up to 15 people.
The creative question underneath all of it was: How do we make the audience part of the story?
-
Grew Texas Style Council from 100 to 1,100 attendees across five conferences, drawing women from around the country.
Built interactive elements throughout the experience that encouraged attendees to meet, participate, explore and contribute, rather than simply consume programming.
Created a gamified sponsor passport that made sponsor engagement part of the attendee experience.
Secured national sponsors including Squarespace, Macy’s, PayPal, ModCloth and Poshmark, with sponsorship packages reaching approximately $10,000.
Built and led the team required to bring increasingly ambitious ideas to life, including sales staff, interns and up to 15 volunteers.
Created a community that returned year after year, with relationships and collaborations continuing beyond the conferences.
Texas Style Council started as an idea on a small budget and became a five-year national event because I never thought of the audience as people we were programming for. They were people we were building it with.
